New Hero: Devroth - Kingdom's White Weenie Warrior

I feel like someone at Ganz crawled into my head and listened to my unconscious desire to make a white weenie deck, a la Magic: The Gathering. When I played MTG back in the day, Crusade decks were always my jam. Savannah Lions, Tundra Wolves, and White Knights... those were the days.

This past week, the introduction of Holy alliance hero Devroth has made weenie decks a possibility in Kingdoms. All three of his charged abilities are geared towards users only using creatures with mana cost two or less. And only creatures—Devroth's abilities are creature focused. He's a straight-forward hero that beginners and veterans can both enjoy. I'm seeing him already pop up quite a bit in guild war defense decks.

I just got Devroth this weekend and I'm still trying different deck ideas to see how he can best work. After being stomped by massive amounts of Guardian of the Old Gods (GooG), Realm Crushers, and Skullcrusher Giants in Epic Tier last week, I knew Devroth was my first choice of the new heroes for his six charge ability "Exile from Battle" (All creatures mana cost 3 or more become 1/1 Peasant tokens). Goodbye, big guys! Sort of.

Six charges is still a lot when dealing with GooG decks (where a low-cost creature is swapped with GooG). Without cards to either still just deal with GooG like Spirits Within, you'll still need to power up your charges quick to deal with them. One way to handle this is with the underrated Rapid Prototype from the new mini-set Light Ascending. Two charges into each ability with the possibility of a 2/3 volatile construct token plays perfectly with Devroth since his three-cost ability to pump up a 2 cost or less creature by +1/+1. You also just dropped 5 mana on Rapid Prototype, but you now possibly have a 3/4 creature in play plus almost enough charges to get a free creature drop from Devroth's four-cost ability.

Many player's initial thoughts for great play with Devroth is Erratic Werewolf which I can't deny. A 3/1 with haste that can be buffed and thrown out for almost nothing fits well with Devroth's abilities. But one new card I haven't seen as many talk about is the new LA card Soldier of Light—a 2 mana drop 2/1 that deals 2 damage on enter to the opposing dark alliance creature. Although his ability is dependent to your opponents creatures, I've found it can really be a great answer to haste and construct decks. Holy doesn't offer a lot of direct damage so this is an interesting card as it works perfectly with Devroth's abilities, as well.
